Flea Market Quilt

By Anna - December 16, 2023

When I saw this pattern by Camille Roskelley many months ago, I knew I wanted to make this quilt because I love the hexi pattern. I had no idea at the time how the pattern would be put together, but I dove right in and bought the pattern and fabric. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it would be some time before I would actually start to make the quilt. I assumed when I started that it would just be another quilt to add to my home collection, but I guess God had other plans.

While sewing this one together I kept questioning if I was to keep this one or give it away. For some reason I kept hearing in my mind that I should give this one to my daughter, Christine. So by the time I was halfway through I had made up my mind that I was going to gift it to her. I don't know why, but it became important for me to finish it right away and mail it before Christmas.

I started on this quilt on the 2nd of December and by the 16th I had it finished including quilting it on Miss Moxie, my longarm machine.

First I had to start by cutting out ALLLLLLL of these hexis. It was a very tedious task.

Here I was trying to determine how to lay out the rows. I always have issues figuring out which colors to put next to which and even though I spend an insurmountable amount of time, I still screw this part up and put same pattern types next to each other and too many of the same color next to each other.

Once this process was done, then it was time to sew the rows together, which wasn't that hard once I got into a rhythm. As I sewed each one, I added it to my design wall, which was a big help in deciding if I wanted to keep the rows where I had them or move them around.

After I sewed all the rows together...

Now it was time to put her on Miss Moxie and get her quilted together. I went with an E2E stipple design.

The finished product after adding the binding:

The backing is almost as pretty as the front...

No quilt is complete without a label and having that personal touch makes it even better.

UPDATE: I watched my daughter open it on the 23rd of December and she seemed to be happy as she wrapped herself up in it. I hope she knows that this was truly a gift of love and meant to be enjoyed and appreciated.

UPDATE #2: I asked Christine if she was using her quilt and she said "no", for the time being it is folded next to her bed, so when she needs to feel close to her Mom, she can hug it and get the sense that I am right there with her as it smells like me (I washed it before I sent it to her). She said "it smells like home." She has no idea how much that meant to me.
